Introduction to the Global Alliance Community Oversight Taskforce.
The International Community of Women Living with HIV is leading the development and implementation of an exciting new development- the Community Oversight Taskforce (COT) in efforts to ensure robust community engagement and in particular woman centered engagement. In partnership with ICW Eastern Africa and the Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children women living with HIV around the world ICW has selected leaders with critical expertise in community engagement to join the inaugural COT.
The Community Oversight Task Force is a unique innovation in this field, with the primary function of ensuring that all efforts of the Global Alliance align with human rights principles, gender equity and that they reflect robust and meaningful community engagement practices. The primary goal of the taskforce is to ensure that women living with HIV remain at the center of efforts to improve outcomes for children, and to support strong and effective community-led monitoring.
BACKGROUND OF THE GLOBAL ALLIANCE TO END AIDS IN CHILDREN BY 2030
The Global Alliance is a collaboration of governments, multisectoral stakeholders, technical partners, people living with HIV, and directly affected communities to end AIDS in children and adolescents by 2030. The Alliance was launched at the 2022 AIDS Conference in Montreal, Canada.
The vision of the Global Alliance is to end AIDS in children through a strong, strategic and action-oriented alliance of multisectoral stakeholders at country, regional and global levels that works with women living with HIV and directly affected communities, national governments and partners to mobilize leadership, funding and action to end AIDS in children by 2030.
Bios of the Inaugural Community Oversight Task Force
Elizabeth Onyango
Elizabeth Onyango is an afro-feminist, a gender equity activist with a burning passion of championing for kp rights with a personal focus on sex workers, people who use drugs and LBQ rights. She is a champion for sexual reproductive and health rights and believes that kp voices belong in every spaces where decisions are being made. Ms Elizabeth is an AVAC Advocacy Fellow Alumni Kenya 2022/2023 and she did an amazing job advocating for SRHR and HIV services access for sex workers who use drugs, she was also part of the Global Fund cycle 7 writing team in Kenya and currently serves as an advisory board member for the GNP+ Young Emerging Leaders Program. Elizabeth is also a representative of communities in the Eastern and Southern Africa regional hub of the Global Alliance to End AIDS in Children by 2030 in which she also sits in the Global Alliance's Advocacy committee leading the Global Alliance's advocacy in ensuring that community voices are well represented in global spaces. Elizabeth is the young people representative in the AIDS2024 organizing committee and the co-chair for the AIDS2024 Global Village, she also works as the programs officer at coast sex workers alliance. Elizabeth is a forever student of life with her feminist ideologies deeply rooted in the Sawubona spirit of African she-roes guided by the principle that; nothing is for us without us.
Robinah Barbiye
Robinah Babirye is a Public Health Advocate, Women and Girls rights Activist and Advocacy Coordinator of the Healthy Empowered and Resilient Initiative(HER), an organization advancing the sexual and reproductive health rights of Adolescent girls and Young women to prevent HIV/AIDs related deaths, end teenage pregnancies and early child marriage. Robinah is the AGYW Focal Point with ATHENA and currently serves as the Community Advisory member at the HIV Cure CAB for Makerere University Walter Reed Project (MUWRP). She also represents Adolescent girls and young women as a Community Advisory Board member for HIV testing Services (HTS) at the Ugandan Ministry of Health, in partnership with Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI). She has five years’ experience in coordinating HIV and sexual and reproductive Health programs, Advocacy, Community mobilization, Awareness creation and peer led HIV treatment literacy. Having worked with ATHENA Network as a Coordinator of adolescent girls and young women, Robinah has extensive knowledge and skills in organizing AGWY led community engagements, mentorship and Life skills development for young women and girls in Uganda and Globally.
Irene Vasco Cossa
Irene Vasco Cossa is a widow and mother of 4 children resident at city of Maputo. I attended the school secondary Mery Jane Wilson up to 12th grade, graduated in management finance for NGOs, formed as secretary general, small business management, formed in sexual health and rights reproductive systems of adolescents and young people trained in leadership participatory, counseling in the area of HIV. With domain in the languages Portuguese, English and Changana. Member of Association Kindlimuka (association of people living with HIV and supports) I was Executive coordinator until May 18, 2024. Currently I am Coordinator of ICW Mozambique,Social activist recognized to the level National and International.
Catherine Madebe
Catherine Madebe is a young Tanzanian advocate concentrating on Gender, HIV/AIDS and Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) of Adolescent Girls and Young Women (AGYW) and Youth. She has seven years of practical experience assisting young people in understanding various issues concerning SRHR and HIV/AIDS. She believes pursuing activism in an unusual business style could push Tanzania to achieve significant milestones in addressing SRHR and improving the HIV response among AGYW. With her outstanding performance in leading and championing SRHR and HIV agendas among youth, she was awarded the Southern African AIDS Trust (SAT) as the Best Celebrity on Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights in Eastern and Southern Africa. Moreover, she is creative, committed, disciplined, and embraces the spirit of volunteerism and professionalism in her work to bring about social transformation for the common good of AGYW in Tanzania. Catherine is also an AVAC Fellow alumni 2022/2023 done a project on strengthening AGYW engagement in HIV prevention response and advocates for new prevention technologies i.e. Dapivirine Vaginal Ring and Injectable PrEP.
Ayomiposi Sanmabo
Ayomiposi Sanmabo is a graduate of project management with over two years of proven expertise in the field of monitoring and evaluation, utilizing evidence to inform and guide program interventions. She currently works as the Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning Graduate Trainee with the Global Network of Young People Living with HIV (Y+ Global) and has previous experience in leading and supporting the M & E processes for innovative education programs focused on bridging educational gaps for children living in hard to reach communities within the North-Central region of Nigeria.
